St.John’s Wort & its Role in Fighting Depression

Most of us have experienced the effects of depression or at least know someone that has. We have seen how depression makes people sad, hopeless, and give up on their lives. These feelings may ultimately result in the worst case scenario, suicide. Depression is a common mental disorder that occurs in most people. According to some researches, in countries like the United Kingdom around 20% of people deal with the effects of the depression. It’s unclear when people started using St.John’s Wort. People have used it for hundreds of years. St.John’s Wort got it’s name after John the Baptist. It’s named that way because it flowers during the period of St. John’s birth. It’s scientific name is Hypericum perforatum. The plant is primarily found in Europe and Asia. It is found throughout the country in the United Kingdom.

Uses of St.John’s Wort for Depression

Studies conducted recently have proven that ingredients found in St. John’s Wort help in fighting depression. Depression affects people with low levels of Serotonin. To the uninitiated, Serotonin is a chemical found in the brain formed from amino acids that sends signals between our nerve cells. St. John’s Wort contains ingredients that boost our Serotonin levels. Hence, it is effective in decreasing the effects of depression. The herb’s supplemental form can be prepared in both solid and liquid form.

Side Effects

Some people using St. John’s Wort have experienced side effects such as lack of sleep, dry mouth, anxiety, diarrhea, and many more. These side effects usually occur when it is used for short term. In addition, the side effects vary from person to person based on age, medical conditions, and etcetera. St. John’s Wort should not be used alongside other drugs because it may weaken the effects of those drugs. It might also lead to death if the supplemental form is used alongside drugs that don’t go well with it. The supplemental form is found in pharmacies. Dosage varies based on age, sex, health and medicinal history. You should consult your doctor before you decide to use it. St.John’s Wort is an effective herbal medicine for people with depression and can be grown in our gardens.
